Mail artist use postal system as medium while avoiding envelope

BETH Jacobs marvels at her mail.

With good reason. She's never sure what might turn up. It could be a pink plastic toy brain or a Pringles can. A glow-in-the-dark alien or a wooden-handled purse. An egg carton or a squishy Halloween-decoration pumpkin head. A license plate or a pizza box.

She's found all of them in her West University Place mailbox at some point, with canceled stamps and clearly printed mailing labels.

But none arrived in a box.

For mail artists, the medium is the postal system. One thing they all have in common? Naked white envelopes make their skin crawl.

Jacobs and her correspondents surprise each other with offbeat mail.

So, a doe was asked out a date. She was so excited she bought a special dress and shoes for the occasion. On the night of the date, after she got herself ready, she was unfortunately trampled by a herd of buffalo.

Thus, this was the first known self-dressed stamped antelope.

The Travelling Stamp

In the words of W.B. Yeats, “stamps are the silent ambassadors on national taste.”

A quick look at the travelling display curated by Washington, D.C.'s Smithsonian Institution: "The Art of the Stamp," provides decades of excellent design for a mere process of moving packages from one door to another.

The exhibit highlights art behind the postage Americans attach to their mail. The art work in the exhibit's eight sections features examples from the American story, American heroes and legends, the American scene, nature, technology and transportation, arts and entertainment, and sports and athletics.

From the 2,000 art works owned by the U.S. Postal Deparment, 94 were selected for this traveling exhibit.
